Canada: I once saw a documentary of a town (Montreal?) where everyone who wanted to move had to move on 1st July ? Is this really true and if so, what bonehead dreamt that idea up & why are people compliant to such a bonkers dictat?

There was a documentary made up of this.

Many years ago, leases used to end on many different days in many different months. The government in Quebec decreed that all leases would be extended to the 30th of June in order to standardize the leases with the school year.

This was done to ensure that students didn't need to travel long distances from their local school. It cut down on the problem of children moving from one school district to another and simplified many other things.

There is nothing in the law that requires a lease to end on the 30th of June. And it certainly has no bearing on house sales. But it has managed to simply some problems and create others (the problem with renting a van to move).

    • ALL leases? Even those that have nothing to do with schools/universities?

If so, this has got to rank as one of the most stupid decisions an alleged government has ever done and who always do lots of stupid things because they don't play with their own money and so they don't care to do things properly in any shape or form.

    • Actually it cut down on the problem of students having to move schools midyear. Since moving day coincides with the school year.
