Since no one else has answered this question, I will.

I guess the best answer is that it would depend on how you define Christianity. If you define it on the basis of beliefs about Christ, regardless of how it's practiced, then yes, the Episcopal church is Christian.

If, however, you believe that Christianity is defined in belief and conformity of Christian lifestyle to the Bible, then you could go either way with the answer. Some people would say that pure biblical Christianity is about peace, justice, love, and equality for all, and homosexual rights are included in that, and the passages that condemn homosexuality in the Bible are outdated and talk about society at that time they were written, not now.

Then again, the Bible does have passages that specifically condemn homosexuality, and if you believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God for all ages, then you must take the view that homosexuality is displeasing to God. It would follow from that that if you do not act or believe in accord with what you call God's Word, you do not follow him as God. From a Christian viewpoint, this would be a denial of Christianity.

From the most common perspective, the Episcopal church is still Christian, but they are taking a very liberal view of what the Bible teachs, to the point where it's a distortion of the limits placed on believers in regards to sexual behavior.

There is one more thing to say about this, though.

You asked if the church itself is still Christian. Of course the body of the church, the people, are. The actions of people in charge do not change the personal convictions of the people within the church. It's only a few people within the leadership which are questionable in their interpretation of Christianity.

    • Christians in the loosest sense of the term. They accept Christ but don't really follow him.

    • I think they would still be defined as christian because if a sin is a sin and sins are all the same there are plenty sins that go on at other churches and christian organizations, like gossip, stealing etc...so who are any of us to judge which sin is worse.

    • But, gossip, stealing etc are not accepted and encouraged by any Christian Church.
