    Exact rules vary from house to house, but generally the rule is that if a player is not in his seat when he receives his 2nd card then his hand is dead and the dealer should muck it at once. Some places will give the absent player until the whole table has been dealt cards before declaring his hand dead, but they will never allow him to return to the table and pick up his hand once action has begun in the hand.
