The National Model Railroaders Association has standardized DCC just enough so that decoders are interchaneable. This is why locomotive manufacturers have been able to develop "plug and play" capabilities into more of their products. As for other equipment: not generally interchangeable, mainly because the hardware doesn't fit other brands.
