I have finally understood that my husband is gay. He wears dresses and make up and it took 10 years for me to understand. I have decided that I want a divorce but dont want to hurt him. How do I civily approach this manner?

First, you may want to talk with him and find out if he truley is gay or not? If he is, then you can base your decisions you draw together from your discussion.

But until you find out, how can you decide what it is that you want to do without knowing?

If you in fact do want a divorce with out hurting him, the best policy is always honesty, but the promise of no hurt is not being honest with yourself. Divorce cannot take place without some kind of hurt, especially after being with someone and sharing a life with someone for 10 years.
