Who (or what) chooses the thumbnail image shown for videos posted on YouTube?

    As far as I can determine it is a function of Youtube (not a human) that chooses based on the length of video. Based on the length is will choose a 'still' a certain amount into the video.

    Youtube does not provide the facility to choose your own thumbnail.
