"The Rock-N-Roll Singer's Survival Manual" by Mark Baxter.

This book is for people who are singing already (specifically in a popular genre, obviously from the title), and want to learn something about doing it better.

Mark Baxter has coached Steven Tyler, Scott Weiland, Gary Cherone, cast members of RENT, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Amiee Mann, Peter Wolf, and others.

When I first looked at this book in the early '90s, I noted that his approach is almost exactly the same as any classical voice teacher's. I very much appreciate and agree with his concept that, whatever style you sing, there is basically a single proper technique.

My favorite feature of the book is that, in the lower corner of every right-facing page is a little line drawing of a person with arrows showing muscular actions. If you flip the pages with off your thumb, it becomes an animated display of how to breathe properly.

It says something about this book that it has now been in print for 15 years. Even among textbooks, this is a rarity.

You might also think about checking out his website at http://www.voicelesson.com.

First and foremost, though, I want to mention that no book can hear you or see you. No book can tell you what you personally do well, or what you personally should work on improving. Bear in mind that, both for physiological and psychological reasons, you cannot hear yourself, either. The only way, really, to learn to sing is one-on-one with a voice teacher.
