Eating habits started back in primitive times. Let's look at nature for a moment: animals do not eat members of their own species, with exceptions. The exceptions are few, well documented, and rare. Furthermore, people who have studied the behavior of predators in forests and jungles have discovered a sort of "code of ethics": predators classify (whether by instinct or passed on by their elders) all animals in their surrounding environment as either "hunters" or "prey"; then they seek to eat only prey. In other words, a hunter does not eat an animal it sees as another hunter. A bear would not hunt a wolf, and a pack of wolves would not hunt a bear. The issue of "intelligence" does not come into play: it's an invention of humans.

    • Wouldn't it have something to do with "hunters" being more difficult prey? A pack of wolves would be very difficult and dangerous for a bear to attempt to make a meal out of. The bear would probably go for targets that are easier to catch and less likely to cause injuries.

    • A wolf that has strayed from the pack is no match for a bear, but a bear would normally not attack it, unless prey is difficult and starvation an issue. There is some evidence that, generally speaking, bears and wolves did not attack people in primitive forests populated by hunting tribes, when prey was plenty. This is true in similar environments today (e.g., like in Finnish forests, which have been extensivly studied).

    • I think that bears and wolves have verry good reasons to be afraid of people. Bears do eat wolf puppies occasionally, but it is very unusual for a bear to eat a full grown wolf. Wolves are faster than bears and have very powerful jaws. Even if a bear could catch a wolf, why would he risk being seriously injured by a wolf bite when other types of food do not carry such a risk?
