Help answer this question below.

People always say they don't care when something bad about them is being said, but nobody complains when something good is being said; if they really didn't care, wouldn't they not care about any of the positive things just as much as the bad?

    You're absolutely correct.

    This is because people's self esteem is strongly invested in people, things and events outside themselves.

    So, if self esteem depends on what someone thinks about you, when they no longer think about you or think about you negatively, there goes self esteem.
