    I'd say definitely.
My freshman year I didn't get to start on the JV team, and we went 2-12. This year I started off on JV but when the varsity catcher got injured I got called up and began starting right away. I worked hard in the offseason, did some hitting camps, and THREW THE BALL a lot. Not exactly the same scenario as you, but in baseball anything can happen, so I'd say practice consistently until try-outs, then go do it. You'll regret it if you don't try, you don't want to think about all of the "what-if's" and "maybies".
