No, I am not. There is no benefit to atheism from my perspective.

    • IMO the benefits are to do good things to be nice not because your going to be smited by some god if you don't.

    • That is a good point. Our motivation for doing good is as important as the good deed your doing.

    • benefit for all is to do things because you just feel personally that it is the right thing to do, not because you're afraid of being struck down by a god. it's about sincerity and integrity

    • Religion. Where do you think the foundation for Western morality began. You can take the "God" out of it if you like, but the morality remains.

    • With people! Who then needed to invent a God to explain what they could not otherwise explain...yadayada Just my opinion. I don't think that God and morality are at all related. So you're right! Take God out of it...and the idea of morality remains! Kind of a God-ectomy I guess you'd call it ;)

    • My first word was Religion, not God.
BTW- I seldom respond to Anonymous posters. A name works for you, and you really remain anonymous.

    • Western morality can actually be traced back to ancient Greece, which forms the bases of Western Philosophy, with their ideas of not killing, stealing etc and their political system, although much has changed today. But where did the Greeks get their morals from? In fact where did our entire species get it's morals from? Religion seems unlikely, more likely is that religion merely reiterated what was commonly believed anyway, and added a few more in like "no Gods before me". For example, other species of primates display morals, some will condem those who kill others in their troop, and gorillas are surprisingly critical of 'adultary'. Morals make sense from an evolutionary stance, and indeed they have evolved over time. For example, today Christians don't take the part of the Bible that says kill all homosexuals, atheists, blasphomers etc as literal. So the decision of what is literal and what a metaphore must be based on a underlying preconseption of what is right and wrong.

    • Good, comments, Godfather! A religion or belief in God surely does not make a person more 'ethical' or moral.

    • Kill us, heh? How about their motto,'' 'Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone!'
They have killed a hell of a lot more people than we ever have!
We have ethics, and we live by them!
Who is filling the prisons? It isn't atheists!
      shakes head woefully. 'Unbelievable''

    • I think I read that 80+ percent of criminals esp murderers were xtian. As for the "us" vs "them" bit, it seems it's perpetually just that. We all know who casts the stones.

    • Uh, what do benefits have to do with what you believe? If you judge things based on rationality it is either true or it isn't, regardless of whether or not it benefits you.

Those religious types are always far behind. If it´s ten years or 6000 years, they´re always behind..
