It may be worth asking them but if they say no I am not sure there is much else you can do. If you don't think you can hold your tempers it might be worth writing it all down first and working out exactly what you want to say before you get there.
It does seem that they knew you would have objections and so took advantage of the fact that you were away. Perhaps you might ask them why they did these things without talking to you first?

I totally agree. Some people either don't know or are inconsiderate. We have had so much damage to our fencing by our neighbors(dog, and broken boards from hanging or heavy leaning items). They even damaged the trees and chain link in front!!. A renter almost burnt the house down lighting a fire without a burning barrel. NOTE: we specifically designed our fence to be at least 6 inches INSIDE property line(surveyed). We also installed all fencing around total property ourselves! I now know to put up signs on all sides(beware of dog and private property(or paint it so no dummy will pull it down). I have every right to hang a sign on my own fence!!! People need to back off of anyone who is legal. I can't believe some remarks of "eyesore". I would take the fence down or paint it crazy to give a real looker. I paid 4 it if i want to brake it my self I WILL! PEOPLE HAVE to stop being controlling over others property.
