Why is it that sometimes a website will disable the "Back" button? Does this give the website some benefit that I'm not aware of?

Most likely, the website has not disabled the back button, but rather has opened a new window or a new tab. When a new window/tab is opened, you cannot use the back button because there is nothing to surf back to.

    • Okay, but is this effective in keeping the user on that site? Is there a good reason to do this? I would think that it hurts the credibility of the website.

    • I would tend to agree that it bugs me when a website opens a new window. I use firefox, and my settings wont allow new windows to open unless I tell them to. When a website tries to open a new window, it opens the page in a new tab instead, which I actually prefer, because it makes everything a little more organized.
