The length of time in service depends on the type of railcar, the type of service, and the age of the railcar. A railcar may be replaced because of its age, but some are replaced because they become obsolete (e.g., an intermodal car than cannot handle containers longer than 40 ft or replaced by higher-tonnage railcars). Railcars can remain in service for 30 to 40 years.
