Military protocol requires that all lower ranked personnel be called to attention when an Officer enters the immediate area (this is usually a room, or area outside - not usually a building since you would have to physically see the officer arriving). In practice this is usually done when a Commanding Officer, that is, the unit commander or another unit's commander arrives. In reality - this is mainly done when a Colonel or higher arrives and leaves. It is military ass kissing.

    • Good answer except for the military ass kissing part. It's a sign of respect. A colonel has earned that respect after 20 or so years of serving his/her country.
