It's not that they can't, obviously many do.
It's that christians believe (or some of us do) that having sex outside of marriage cheapens what is supposed to be a sacred bond within marriage. Sex is supposed to be an expression of deep love (not excluding lust from that love). If one has premarital sex, however, it is more likely that the mind will subconsciously relate sex only to lust and very little to love. This leaves many people who indulge in premarital sex feeling empty within marriage, as if something is missing. Why chance ruining something as important as a good marriage with a quick toss in the sack?

    • It may be more likely, but it's not a foregone conclusion. A person can have a loving, sexual relationship outside marriage, too. And it's also possible to have a marriage based on lust. I've known couples who dated very briefly and got married quickly just so they could have guilt free sex. These whirlwind weddings led to unhappy marriages once the novelty of sex wore off.
