Programs may use many different codecs. For example, as taken from http://code.google.com/apis/talk/open_communications.html#codecs , google supports: Today, Google Talk supports the following standard voice codecs: PCMA, PCMU, G.723, iLBC, and Speex. We also support codecs from Global IP Sound: ISAC, IPCMWB, EG711U, EG711A.

I would be surprised if yahoo didn't support some similar codecs.
