It has never been possible to achieve whatever goal you set, either in America or anywhere else in the world.

Reality imposes constraints, and understanding which constraints are real, and which constraints are your imagination ... is the stuff of which sanity is made.

You cannot fly by flapping your arms. All goals must be grounded so that they don't violate such constraints.

    • Of course. But what inspired the Wright brothers to build a plane? It had to start somewhere. As well grounded as it was in reality, at some point someone had to say, "Hey, I want to fly".

    • That's right -- the combination of imagination and vision PLUS a good grasp of what's realistic is what does the trick. That combination is a function of personal development, and one's geographic location is a relatively minor component in the whole equation.

    • Yeah, I should have phrased the question better. I was thinking more along the lines of how it takes a dozen permits to do anything anymore. Is all the red-tape stifeling America's inventive, expansionistic spirit?

    • Brand, I don't understand.
we can set goals....and of COURSE there will be hurdles...
I came from a very poor background. I was homeless at 18, and I have several degrees, and I have become a very successful man.
where there is a will there is a way. You think it is easy? no. But it is possible.

    • The point of this answer is that reality has constraints. There really are things -- nearly an infinite number of them -- which are simply impossible. End of story. Then, humans come along and invent a bunch of barriers for themselves which aren't real, but which appear to be real. Those are the kinds of barriers that one must overcome to fulfill their potential. That in no way changes the nature of reality, which is very constraint-bound.
