What is the history behind earrings? When were they first worn?

    Not quite a full answer I know, but back in the days of sailing ships and pirates a man would wear an earring if he had survived a shipwreck, typically a gold hoop, and that is where we get the classic pirate image from.

    • another explanation is that crossing the equator was an occasion for sailors to pierce their ear.

    • there are more than two stories about that stereotypical earring, this is no more plausible than the others
