Can anyone please help me factor x^2 +x-6?

    If you look at the general version of a quadratic equation:

    Ax^2 + Bx + C = 0

    then you are looking for factors which multiply to equal C and add to equal B (let's assume that A equals 1 for now otherwise it gets more complicated). So in the equation:

    x^2 + x - 6 = 0

    you need to look for two numbers that multiply to give -6 and add to give +1. Once you find them (and there aren't many possibilities in this case), you put them inside the brackets to give:

    (x + 3)(x - 2) = 0 (as per the above answer)

    and from this you can solve the equation for x. Remember, the solution to the equation is the reverse of the factors you just found, since the equation only equals zero when x = -3 or 2 (these values of x make each half of the bracket equal zero).

    All clear as mud? Great!
