I once lived in France and spoke, lived and even dreamt in French. One night, on the TV a show came on, and the actors were speaking English (with an American accent). My brain did not recognize it right away and I had the experience of being able to hear what American English sounds like to the foreign ear. I distinctly remember wide open and loud vowel sounds. Big open vowels.... That's not a British experience but that's the best I can share.
