Why do Final Fantasy VII & VIII (probably more) for the PS1 have more than 1 disc?

    Because the discs used were CD's, which can only hold a max of about 700 MV. PS2 games were on DVD's which where about 4.5 GB (4500 MB) or 9 GB (9000 MB), depending if single or dual layer discs where used. And now with current gen systems, the PS3 Blu-Ray game discs how either 25 GB (25 000 MB) or 50 GB (50 000 GB), again, depending if it is single or dual layer discs.

    So, as my short answer, the discs didn't have high enough capacity to fit everything on one disc.
