The FDA maintains a list of drugs that are about to lose their patents, and ones that have already lost them. Check out the FDA website for this information.

Generic drugs usually come out as soon as the patent on a brand-name drug has expired. Drug patents last for about 17 years. So, check how old a drug is, and you'll be able to estimate that about 17-18 years after that date, a generic drug will be coming out.

    Comments
    • Manufacturers can make a minor change in formulation and have the patent extended.
