An "alternative" lifestyle is "alternative" to what?

    usu. the alternative sexually oriented individual had a tramatic incident in there youth that creates an imbalance in their thought processes, such as being molested etc. or there may have been a gender confused individual in the child's life that altered his sexual orientation. so in short it is "alternative" to (but no a true alternative to heterosexuality) heterosuxual relationships. i.e.: 'an alternative to a male sexual partner is a female'. hope i could help you out.
