There are different types of peroxides. Some peroxides are very bad for you to touch at all. If the question refers to, and I hope it does, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) than it is mostly safe though not necessarily as effective as you would want for regular tooth maintenance. Hydrogen peroxide as regularly available (3%) is not bad for sanitizing non porous surfaces, cleansing cuts and scrapes, or used as a mouthwash or occasionally a toothpaste substitute. I prefer to dilute~50% with water when using as a mouth wash and I don't use it regularly (Once a week, maybe) 30 second to 1 minute treatments. I've even heard that an H2O2 rinse/brushing can sooth tooth aches (I don't know this personally). I personally cannot stand the taste/smell of H2O2 so when I do mouthwash with it I will brush with a paste after to kill the taste. There is a recipe for toothpaste that consists of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide that has been a time honored foaming toothpaste (I'm not sure of this recipe you might ask your grandmother for it, though toothpastes today are much nicer on your teeth) However you DO NOT want to swallow H2O2, it is not at all good for you, so if it is not easy to brush your teeth without swallowing even a little then I'd say pass on this as a toothpaste substitute. Also as a regular (daily or more) treatment you should dilute well. H2O2 is not good for prolonged use on the sensitive type skin you find in ones mouth, it can dry you out and causes skin damage, and is acidic so should not remain on the teeth for long periods of time. Check the hydrogen peroxide bottle many have brushing/mouthwash instructions and will give you some good safety precautions.

    • H2O2 is not acidic, but basic, with a pH of 6.2. I also dilute it 50/50 with water as a mouthwash; and I rinse afterward with plain water. For brushing, I pour a little H2O2 straight on my toothbrush and then dip it in baking soda I've put in the palm of my hand. Of course, I rinse well afterward. I use a Sonicare toothbrush and am careful to use VERY little pressure or the baking soda will irritate my gums.
