The superstition of breaking a mirror while looking into it is that you break your soul. It IS possible to not be looking into it when it is broken, for example, if the wind blows it over in the night and it smashes upside down, (therefore you cannot see your reflection, which by the way would not bring bad luck because it was not your fault it was blown over) then you would not get bad luck. The only bad luck you can get is if you purposely break a mirror, looking into it or not. An accident is an accident.

Some people believe if you leave the (accidently) shattered pieces in their place for seven hours the bad luck seeps away.
