Do you think by giving incentives (like money) for kids to get good grades, and do better in school, would actually work, or really make them any smarter?

I have to admit to being guilty of this one. I give my kids $100 if their end of term report has all A's or above on it, or $50 if it's all B's or above. Anything below they get nothing, except last time our youngest had risen from an E- to C+ in maths and the teacher wrote "tried really hard and a great improvement" so we felt he had earnt it.

    • See, I think thats the most important thing, is to earn something, I don't think you should just tell your child, ok, if you do this good, I'll give you this much money. It really should be earned without knowing about it.

    • at 8th grade graduation, two of the kids got "Cum Laude" - I hadn't known there was a competition or what the rules were - the school prided itself on not giving grades - so what were these "Cum Laudes" based on? and was it unfair that I didn't get one? and was it unfair that nobody told me about them or about the criteria for getting one?
