My pontiac grand am wont start. it acts like its out of gas. but has a quarter tank in it. whats wrong?

my grand am did the exact same thing and it turned out the gas gauge was wrong we put gas in it and it ran fine. even though it says theres a quarter tank you should try putting more gas in it
