You're reading My car is making a horrible squealing noise (like when someone's just slammed on the brakes) when I drive over 8mph. I tried looking at the belts, and they all seem fine. Could cold be a factor in this?

Hi,
I haven't tried just revving the engine yet, because it's kind of late and I live on a residential street. It doesn't get any louder with the brakes, but it doesn't seem to get quieter either. The noise stops if I shut off the engine and coast, it also stops if I'm going less than 10mph (roughly). Thank you!

Sounds like a belt or an tensioner pully problem. It is really hard to tell if the belt is glazed by looking at it. If it only has one wide belt I would replace that first. If not let me know what make model and year the car is and I can give you more info.
