Question

Help answer this question below.

My car is making a horrible squealing noise (like when someone's just slammed on the brakes) when I drive over 8mph. I tried looking at the belts, and they all seem fine. Could cold be a factor in this?

Will it make the noise sitting still just revving the engine? If you are moving and it makes the noise will it stop if you shut off the engine and coast? Louder with brakes? quiter? More details in comments please

    • Hi,
I haven't tried just revving the engine yet, because it's kind of late and I live on a residential street. It doesn't get any louder with the brakes, but it doesn't seem to get quieter either. The noise stops if I shut off the engine and coast, it also stops if I'm going less than 10mph (roughly). Thank you!

    • Sounds like a belt or an tensioner pully problem. It is really hard to tell if the belt is glazed by looking at it. If it only has one wide belt I would replace that first. If not let me know what make model and year the car is and I can give you more info.
