While driving, my 2002 Ford Taurus begins to sputter. It does this for a little while then it drives smoothly again. The "service engine soon" light started blinking on and off while sputtering then stays on when cars runs smooth. The sputtering has been

    You need to pull the error codes from the ECU.

    A handheld OBD-II scanner could do this, as could a diagnostic from a shop, as could counting the check engine lamp flash pattern while following the "retreiving OBD-II codes" section in a manual like Chiltons or Haynes for your car (which may be available at your local library).
