Help answer this question below.

Can you be called an otaku if you have 50 some manga that you like to read? Or is that reserved for someone who is a little more of a fanatic...?

    Originally, the word referred only to fanatics, like kinda scary fanatics. But more recently the word has come to a wider use and also refers to mere enthusiasts, or people who just really like something.
    You can call yourself otaku if you want, but you don't have to.

    • As a general rule, if you think you might be, you probably are. I know I am. I blame Masashi Kishimoto and that dang naruto! I just proved my otaku status right there. If you know the word otaku and you argue on chat rooms about manga and anime and you know several manga artists, you are at least in the shallow end of the otaku pool. The thing to remember is, if you can't relate to other people due to your overindulgence to anime and manga, you might be otaku. I sound like Jeff Foxworthy!
