Why would anyone "row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream..." when you really need to row upstream only?

    Rowing will allow much more control than just drifting. Rowing gently will allow the current to do most of the work moving the boat, yet still allow for steering, whereas just drifting will not allow for steering at all.
