As my fellow member said, it depends on the species. Some fish grow all their lives (as well as some reptiles, such as crocodilians) and, theoretically, have no upper limit on their size. Their growth is primarily governed by the amount of space (the size of the tank) and their nutrition. I have had the experience of having fresh-water angelfish remain size-stable until moved to a larger tank, where they would suddenly grow significantly.
