After playing any game for 10 minutes on my Gamecube, I get the error "disc cannot be read - please refer to GC instruction book for further instructions." What should I do?

  I got my gamecube at release, but now i have a problem with it. Everytime i put a disc in as i turn it on, it isn't read, i have to open the disc cover and close it alot it will be read, or if i turn it on and walk away for 20 mins, it reads it, why?
