Being sick is kind of a stigma in American germophobic society. For example, I live in a college dorm suite, and if one person gets sick, everyone else completely avoids them. It may be smart, but if you're the sick one it completely sucks because you feel ostracized and friendless. That's why I crossed my fingers and kept hanging out with my good friend who got pneumonia...luckily I'm fine and it kept her happy!
