Yes, it is a double standard. Both men and women should be held in contempt for bad behavior.

I totally agree Glenn.

WHY is having sex (if it is done safely, consentingly, with mutual respect/enjoyment etc.) wrong!?? (considered bad behaviour) Please! some-body give me a reason I can respect to refute my position - if you can do it with-out falling back on hearsay! (heresy!)
by WussiePussieHasLetHimselfOutOfTheBag on December 26th, 2006
I believe that engaging in casual sex OFTEN is wrong, protection or not. Its all about morals and values. The question refers to what women are called for sleeping around, yet men dont seem to get called names
by JUSTNORMAL on January 1st, 2007
Glenn...did you miss the part in the bible about Jesus saying "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."? Or do you really think that you are without sin? I think your comment is extremely offensive, and it is the type of comment that really makes many people dislike "religious fanatics". Read perryman's answer if you would like to see a better response.

actualy the question makes no statment one way or the other about men.... it is mierly regarding women.... implications (which there are none here unless you consider omission implication) can not be taken as declarations.

prask, did you miss all of the references in the Bible that condemn sex outside of the bonds of marriage? Did you also miss the part after Jesus condemned the hypocrisy of the Jews in bringing the adulteress before Him without bringing the equally guilty men where Jesus told that woman to go and sin no more. In other words, He told her to stop engaging in that kind of behavior.

Marriage is just a ritual invented by men to legitimize the husband's claim to the wife as his possession. In your precious bible, Adam and Eve's relationship was not ritualized by marriage. I guess they were destined for hell even before the serpent and the apple. And please...where are "all the references in the bible that condemn sex outside the bonds of marriage"? There are many references that can be INTERPRETED to condemn sex outside of marriage, but I see none that state outright that sex outside of marriage is a sin...unless it is adultery.
by ptrask on July 23rd, 2009
Note how quick some people are to reference the Bible when they think that it supports their point of view and how quickly the same person is condemn it when it is shown that it it does not.
by Glenn Blaylock on July 23rd, 2009
glen... have I mentioned that you rock... I can't decide if I am excited for the day we are on opposite sides of an argument because the debate would be good with both sides using logic, or if I fear it because you are much more knowledgable than I especially when it comes to siting sources.

Oh and by the way, ptrask asked where the Bible condemns sex outside of marriage. This is referred to as fornication and here are some references that condemn it (see highlighted verses):

Yes, this is a woman-specific standard. Men and women are very different in biological goals, so how could it be a one standard for both??
by Pandiri on September 23rd, 2009
biologicaly our motivators are different... but as humans (rather than merely animals) we are all held to the same standard regardless of our motivation. as such, being a man doesn't justify sleeping around any more than PMSing justifies being a jerk.
by TAPriceCTR s son is wearing his COAT on September 23rd, 2009
There are more than different motivations, there are different destinies. Women bring children to the world.
Even in nowadays, indiscriminate sexual contacts threaten reproductive abilities of a women. This is the rational background under the cultural reprehension for slut.
In contrast, men use more polygam reproductive strategies. I do not advocate to repress this part of man's nature, just because we share this part with animal world.
by Pandiri on September 23rd, 2009
we also share breathing oxygen with the animal world. it is not that animals do it that makes it bad, it is that we are more than JUST animals that makes us responsible to behave with honor. if you are fine being a slut/manwhore that is well and good... so long as you do not hide that fact from your partners. but if you choose to be a slut/manwhore do not take offence at the lables. if the shoe fits wear it.
by TAPriceCTR s son is wearing his COAT on September 23rd, 2009
Slowdown. It is a huge distance between whoring and some level of poligamy. And nonetheless, man promiscuous behaviour is culturaly blamed, as well.
By the way, I have one wife, no affairs, and not all of my thoughts are from the physical experience or affiliation to.
I proudly say that I am 90% animal, and, still, this does not reduce of my human merit.
Back to the question, I fully agree that slut is a women-oriented offensive word, but I actually argue with the conjunction "due". We are equal, but different.
