First you need to find out all the risks associated with having a birth outside of a hospital. For many people, these risks aren't that high. For some people, the risks are unacceptably high. It's a matter for you to decide.

Once you've decided you can accept the risks involved, then you need to decide if you want to have an attendant (a midwife would be the usual medical professional in attendance) or if you want to perform an unassisted birth. This can add additional risks.

After that, you should do more research on what sort of things you should have around to ease the labor, and to help take care of the baby in those critical moments after birth. If you have a birth attendant, he or she will likely take care of acquiring a "birth kit" full of useful things.

Then it's a simple matter of getting a kiddy pool, and making sure your hot water heater can handle the job of filling it (sometimes repeatedly) with hot water during your labor. Oh, and having the baby without any pain medication.

I have friends who have done this, and I have friends who have chosen not to after investigating it.

    Good luck.

    • I would definetly recomment having someone experienced with water births there for your first one. Questions inevitably come up during labor that you'll want someone there to answer. Great answer here riffraff814.
