Well I was once in that situation. Me being the woman ending the long-term relationship with her boyfriend. I've now realized that I did it (spontaneously) because as the day came closer to deciding whether to marry him, I saw our relationship clearer. For example, I realized I couldn't spend the rest of my life with him because he was self-centered, selfish, and thoughtless (they all go hand-in-hand) to say the least. There was also controlling and deceitful. I couldn't stand the thought of putting up with all this FOREVER. Marriage is one of the biggest commitment and when it comes around you really start to see the big picture, good and bad. By the way, I am married now to a wonderful man that is none of those things. Communication and honesty go a long way.
