A working prototype of a flying car has already been invented. To see it, do a google search for the "Moller M400".

Any new invention of this sort will always face an uphill climb against the status quo.

A more accurate question would be "Why haven't they been implemented yet?"

    Somethings to consider....

-Overhaul the entire transportation system and build sky highways? What is so wrong with the current system that we'd have to do this?

-Where do we get the money?

-Federal regulators? How do we get approval? In a post 9/11 political environment, anything with the word "fly" raises eyebrows.

-Do we put thousands of auto-workers out of jobs? Pissing off the unions is a sure way to end a political career.

-Traffic flow considerations? What technology do we use to regulate this sky highway? How about sky toll collections?

-Safety Considerations? The sky is already overly-congested with commercial and military aircraft, do we really want to make things worse?

-Do we form another police force and emergency response system? Sky Highway Patrol, Federal or State? How about sky medics?

This list is not all inclusive but as you can see, it will be a big task for any government.

A government is a bureaucratic machine which moves very slow unless impacted by major events.
