Hello. I just want to say that to live with this belief must be extremely depressing. Or it must be nothing at all. May I ask do you feel? Do you believe that you have a soul? A purpose at all for living?
We just live here on this eart for a maximim of maybe 100 years then are gone? And what about those who die young? What is even the point?
There would be no point in living, I believe.
My beliefs are: There is a God, he created us, we are his design and he loves us so much. He put us here on this eart to help eachother, bring others to Jesus Christ, to save them, not only from spending eternity in hell but from a destructive, meaningless life.
He has brought us here to give the hopeless, hope.
To save us so we may too, join him in not just some place we go after we die, but to his magnificient kingdom he has created just for us.
And yes, I completely agree that intentions are very important. Why do something good if you just do it for something in return?
There is no point.
I believe your intentions should be to to do it for the glory of God, to show his love to the world.
Then you don't do it to go to heaven, but either way you deserve to go to heaven.
This is just what I believe. Forgive me for preaching.
I know it's been a while since you posted this but if you do get the chance, I would love to hear your response. Thank you so much.

@MissyIdol: this question was posted in 2006. It's not likely that EL1 is around to answer you. But I was around, and I remember the discussion. Here's my response to your questions:
1- Why would there be something depressing about death being the end? Why must one have the notion that they will live forever in order to be happy now? This makes no sense to me: I don't think I will live beyond death, but I'm quite happy with my life. It's a wonderful opportunity that I appreciate deeply.
I will die, everyone dies. That's a part of life. If one is mature and stable and understands that the nature of life is inherently transitory, this isn't depressing. Are you depressed when you are watching a movie because you know its going to end?
If I was that obsessive about keeping everything going, THAT would be depressing. Imagine being so attached and obsessed with the future that you can't enjoy the present. How sad.
2- I do not believe in a soul.
3- The purpose of living is to live fully: to be awake to the opportunity and use it well... to live and love and create and dance and work and celebrate the wonderful opportunity life is, and then collapse in a satisfied and exhausted heap when you're done, having lived well, ready to pass on that flame to the next generation.
4- Why would you think there's no point for living? That seems just bizarre. Are you somehow incapable of taking responsibility for your own life and making sure you live it in a meaningful way?
It sounds like this religion of yours is a sort of band-aid that you're putting on the wounds in your heart and mind: it gives you "hope". Why on Earth would you need "hope", unless you're basically failing to make a meaningful and satisfying life?
I say "stop failing at that". Get to the bottom of what is making you unhappy and resolve that. Don't patch yourself up with ancient myths and hopeful stories for which there is no evidence.
Sorry for preaching, but your comment is just so sad I feel called to help.
Get with the program. You're missing out on life, and you only get one chance.

I'm sorry you were offended that some want to approach the afterlife scientifically. I don't think that science can give definitive answers on this anyway, but that doesn't mean others cannot inquire into it, or that their questions should be pushed into other categories.
