A bank of sensors continuously monitors any clearly repeated road markings at either side of the car much like an ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) counts the grooves on the wheel rotor. If the sensor detects the car moving over a line of markings without the driver activating a turn signal the system computer assumes the driver is acting unintentionally and a warning is sounded to either alert, wake up or tell the driver to put his/her beer down. Most systems self activate when the car exceeds a predefined speed to pevent false and annoying warnings while parking/manouvering etc.
