To see how much your ratings of questions or answers is worth, look at your "My Profile" page. On the right side, you'll see a section that lists how much your votes are worth. When you first join the site, your positive votes are worth +1 point, and your negative votes are worth -1 point, but those will both go up as you earn more points on the site.

Why are some people all hyped up over the 'points' on here? Am I missing out? Is there cash money for higher levels?

Are the points we give directly related to our level? When I moved from expert to professor, my points value did not change.

If I understand correctly, I lose a point for each negative rating I have given? So, we're being punished in a way for being honest? That's pretty sad.

what levels do our abilities to give more points go up?

Miss Laura: you're not the one being punished. The person who recieves your negative vote is instead, so don't worry!

This is somewhat confusing, so I want to make sure I have it straight. If I rate someone positive they receive one positive point from me because I'm level one and if I were to rate them negative they receive one negative point from me because I'm level one. On the other hand, if I were at a different level they would receive more or less points, right? Finally, the way I can get points is in my answering or asking, and I receive points the same way others earned them - one point for each rating or more for higher level people rating me?
