    Mr. Meaulnes

For one thing, it makes it fairly apparent that Americans haven't embraced the more efficient and less wasteful alternatives to toilet paper to the same extent as the rest of the world.
In many places, it's much more common to use a bidet in one's home, and the only place you're likely to find toilet paper at all is in public lavatory stalls.

Also, it might have something to do with the fact that Americans are, as a whole, a fair bit larger than people in other places.
A larger person takes in more food, and the average American diet tends to consist of heavier food, ergo they produce higher volumes of solid waste per-person than the rest of the world.

I'm not saying that Europe's shit smells like roses, I'm sure they make their fair share of environmental impact just like the rest of the world, but at least they don't use as many trees cleaning it up.

    • A bidet is more hygienic but no more ecologically friendly than paper. Water is a precious commodity as well.

    • Yes, but water is usually a bit easier and less energy-consuming to filter and recycle.
