I don't know what book_S_ she refers to in her mostly autobiographical Bell Jar, but I heard in an interview that she read Freud's Abnormal Psychology. I would say she was bipolar, possibly dealt with body disorder and obsessive tendacies and was, obviously, suicidal.
For more info I suggest Rothenberg's "Creativity and madness: New findings and old stereoptypes"

    • What was the book? You don't tell us--find out! It's spelled TENDENCIES.
