What does it mean to "Draw and quarter" some one?

    The total is "hanging, drawing and quartering". People were hanged until they ere nearly, but not completely, dead. Then they were cut down and disembowelled (drawn). The body was then cut up into four quarters (roughly, arms and lags plus attached pieces). The quarters were sent to provincial cities to show the punishment for treason or whatever it was that the unfortunate victim had done. His head generally remained (on a spike) wherever the punishment was inflicted.
