    Frenchman on a Horse

In this day and age, there really is no reason to know how to efficiently add, subtract, multiply and divide.. Sure it is useful, but so is Latin, and my folks lamented it's departure from my curriculum as well.. A basic understanding of the concepts is mostly all a kid needs, so they understand why when you put four fours together, you have sixteen, but that's all they really need to know.

Thing is, calculators can be bought anywhere for two dollars, so even in a pinch, knowing how to add won't matter unless the end of the world comes. But then math won't matter anyways, because we'll be beating maize in an old hubcap instead of pondering the volume of cylinders.

Things leave the school system for a reason, and though we can get nostalgic for the old grey matter days, there are a lot of more relavent newer technologies like computers etc, that will compete with some of the older diciplines.

There really is only so much one can teach, and calculators get rid of one thing. It's sad, I know, but that's the way it goes..
