Help answer this question below.

Most employers want you to give a 2-week notice if you plan to quit, however they can fire you on the spot, sometimes without what some people would consider to be a good reason. That doesn't seem like a level playing field. What do you think? Comments..?

    it's not fair at all
    and depending on their excuse for firing you, you may not even be eligible for unemployment

    the law should back up a standard practice in some companies of verbal warning, write up, termination.
    except in instances of extreme reason for immediate termination (drug use, fist fight with co-worker, a danger to others, theft, etc) a violation of company policy should be met with a verbal warning (and possible sent home for the day or made to correct the violation) followed by a write up on the second offense (with 1 to 5 day suspension depending on case) and only then should termination be allowed.
    additionally the employee should have recourse to dispute claims made against him/her, to present their side of the events and offer witness testimony

    unions are a double edged sword, it would be better for all concered if our government could provide the protection of a union without the graft and corruption that they can breed
