Writing down what's on your mind can help. Journaling can help you sort through things that may be bothering you and, with your thoughts recorded, you can give yourself permission to take the night off from thinking about them without fear you may forget something important.
I personally find meditation the best solution when I can't get my thoughts under control and fall asleep. I choose a word or a short passage (called a mantra in meditation - a sound or image can also work) and repeat it over and over in my mind to calm my thoughts. This takes practice and a little effort as thoughts can easily drift elsewhere and your brain can start spinning again without you even realizing. My mind will wander initially, but I am eventually able to focus fully on the words/passage and my mind settles down.
