A receiver is the heart of most home audio systems. Its primary functions are to receive radio signals (acting as a "tuner"), to amplify sound from the radio or other inputs, and to switch between the various inputs. Receivers will usually have inputs for several types of devices, including CD players, DVD players, tape decks, turntables, and more.

Receivers will have outputs that can go directly to your speakers. Depending on the receiver, it may have outputs for any number of speakers. Some receivers will have a dedicated output for a subwoofer.
