A subwoofer reproduces low-frequency (bass) signals. There are many reasons to use one, including:

    - A subwoofer will reproduce bass more accurately than other, smaller speakers. It will add the low-frequency "thumps" that other speakers may not be able to produce, thereby giving you more accurate sound reproduction.

    - It allows you to isolate the signals sent to your other speakers. If a speaker is receiving low- and high-frequency signals, there will be some "intermodulation" distortion, which will decrease your signal quality. A proper subwoofer setup will include a crossover that sends the low-frequency signals to the sub-woofer and the higher frequency signals to your other speakers. This also allows you to play the whole system at a higher volume because each speaker will only be receiving signals it can handle properly.
